In presentation to Wellington City Council (WCC) on 15th June, Corporate Affairs & Policy Manager, Ed Gibbs set out the Chamber’s position regarding Let's Get Wellington Moving's (LGWM) Golden Mile Traffic Resolutions.
The Chamber supports fellow trade associations Property Council New Zealand (Wellington Branch), Retail NZ, and Hospitality NZ, echoing their practical concerns regarding the impact of the changes on businesses directly affected, particularly during the construction phase. The project risks substantial financial out lay in return for limited productivity gains.
While recognising the importance of substantial infrastructure investment in Wellington, in line with Let's Get Wellington Moving's broader transformative program, which includes mass rapid transport and urban density promotion, the Chamber believes that the Golden Mile proposal falls short of the transformative vision set by LGWM. The Chamber argues that restricting vehicle access without introducing mass rapid transit is insufficient and could potentially lead to congestion in other parts of the city, while also limiting access to the Golden Mile.
Another significant issue raised by the Chamber is the lack of transparency around the costs of LGWM projects and the proportion that WCC will be expected to contribute. We are concerned by the level and quality of information provided to councillors and the public regarding the project. We urge LGWM to do better and call on all councillors to hold the organisation to account.
